While I'm cooking root vegetable soup, a television poll or rather meme - where everyone who stumbles upon this checks off their current favorite television series, which they've been obsessing over. (I really should be working on my taxes...but, alas, the last time I did my taxes on Valentine's Day, someone broke in my apartment and stole my laptop while I was sleeping with all my tax information on it. So, I'm slightly superstitious, granted that was a different apartment, and it's close to impossible to do it here...but still.)

Anyhow, back to the poll/meme. Once you check off your favorite television series (the one you are obsessive about at the moment), assuming of course I managed to list it (if I didn't mark other and list in comments), go to the comments and make your case for the show - list any links to meta, fanfic, fanart, fan communities, boards, vids, etc - the links not the actual work. If someone else listed it first, reply to their response and list yours...who knows you might have made a new connection. Oh and here's the important part -- MAKE SURE YOU TELL PEOPLE, ie me, WHERE THEY CAN WATCH OR SEE YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW! (otherwise, how will it get new viewers?? If people can't find it, they can't watch it. Keep in mind we live in a world with over 1000 different channels and distribution venues.)

For people like myself that watch television but aren't obsessed with any tv shows or in any fandoms at the moment - I have "Nothing at the Moment" listed, because I'm not obsessive about any television series at the moment -- but I'm curious to see where everyone else is leaning. And if there is anything interesting out there that I'm overlooking.

[As an aside, once you insert the poll - you can't edit it -- which makes doing polls a dicey enterprise.]

I rather enjoyed doing that last post and apparently I have time on my hands. One of the side-effects of being laid up with a broken foot - is you do have a lot of time on your hands.

An aside on vids - I can't do them myself, so I'm relying on people who have created their own and posted to You Tube, the vid usually states who it is by. Also the trick of a good vid and music match-up is to catch the essence of a character or match-up that explains to someone else what you loved or see in them. What pricked your interest.

All of the below vids have spoilers. I have them arranged by tv series/fandom:

1. Doctor Who

I've the perfect song for Doctor Who and River Song pairing..."Time After Time by Cyndie Lauper" - although I prefer a different version of the song.

This contains spoilers for New Doctor Who S4-S6 )

10th Doctor Who - "It's My Life" - I liked this video best and the song has a nice ironic twist for this lyric: "It's my Life, it's now or never, I'm not going to live forever..."
But it has the joi de vivre of the companions that join the doctor. Or expresses why they do it.

contains spoilers for Doctor Who Seasons 1-4 or all of 10's arc )

2) Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Series

* Xander Harris - I don't know what the song is here, but it actually works, and this is the only vid I could find that fit him and the only song...

contains spoilers for Buffy S1-7 )

What I loved most about Xander was his quips. The character made me laugh. Whedon infused Xander with his quippy self-deprecating charm.

Weirdly there's more Xander/Buffy, Xander/Giles (really? okaay. I get Xander/Spike and even Xander/Angel, but Xander/Giles??), Xander/Dawn (doesn't work for me...but to each their own),
Xander/ Willow (now that one I actually shipped briefly), Xander/Anya...

I find one for Xander/Cordy that I think works better for Xander/Anya - "The Story of US"

* Darla - found the following intense vid to "Sea Lion Woman" by Fiest:

contains spoilers for Angel the Series 1-5 )
This works so well, with the words and the rhythm - it has that teasing deceptiveness that was at the heart of Darla. When I heard the song - I admittedly thought, Darla.

* Angelus - to the song "Dragula by Rob Zombie":

contains spoilers for both Buffy and Angel )

* And oh dear, someone actually did a Fanged Four vid to Lady Gaga's Bad Romance - that's too perfect:

spoilers for Buffy and Angel )

* Spike and Angel to "They Can't Take That Away From Me"...and if you are like me you may well mistake the line..."we may never meet again on the bumpy road of life" to "we may never meet again on the buffy road of life."

spoilers for Angel S5 mainly )

3. Game of Thrones:

The following are vids for Jamie Lannister, which are quite good and contain spoilers through S3 of the television series. But no book spoilers.

* Jamie Lannister - Everybody Loves Me )

The song is ironic particularly in how the vid pairs with it. Works brilliantly.

*Jamie Lannister - There are No Men Like Me )

And finally You Won't Forget My Name

* Kingslayer )

I'm clearly a fan of tortured characters.

Here's a Tyrion Lannister vid - and the only one I could find with a song...and it is fittingly to The Raines of Castamere.

spoilers through S3 )
Weirdly I think the song fits Tyrion better, due to the heightened irony.

And here's Ayra:
spoilers through S3 )

5) OUAT

All of these vids have major plot spoilers through S2. Nothing past S2.

* Emma/Neal - this does have spoilers for S2:

Emma and Neal - Poison and Wine, or I Don't Love You, But I'll Always Will )

Emma
spoilers for S2 and emphasizes the feeling that she no longer knows where she stands or what is real )
This is a good video and song pairing for Regina to Let it Rock:

spoilers of course )

Finally found a decent and not too sappy Henry+Emma video...that fits how I see their relationship to I'll Save the World
focuses on their friendship and bonding, as well as the parental vibe )

I like this vid, because it is a tad subversive gender wise.

Finally...the sexy ones:

* Hook to the song For Your Entertainment

spoilers )
Fitting, because he literally is there for our entertainment.

*Rumplestilskin to the song "Remedy" - the lyrics quite fit the tortured soul that is Rumple:
Remedy )

And two interesting takes on the Cora/Rumple relationship, the first to the song "Tragedy" and the second to the Lady Gaga Song Love Game, which is just a tad racy.
Both of these have spoilers galore for season 2.

a) Rumple and Cora - Tragedy or Don't Call This Love )

b)Rumple and Cora- Love Game )

Both get across their twisted and tragic relationship.

1. Leave a comment to this post - specifically saying that you would like a letter.
2. I will give you a letter. (If you don't want a letter but feel like commenting anyway, feel free.)
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows.
[You don't have to play the game...and can just comment anyway. Also since I'm not a fan of following rules of memes...I'm adding one category.]
4. Name two favorite musicians whose names begin or end with the letter.

My letter was "L" which is not as easy as it looks. (I just realized they have to begin with the letter not end with it. Damn it. I can't use the Lannister's from Game of Thrones. Oh well, probably of the good.)

The poll below is well what it looks like - a poll to stave off general boredom. I have no idea what to call the thing - Culture Poll with Weather and a few other quirky non-related poll questions??

Since it is a poll and I suck at editing these things and never pre-plan them, there are no doubt tons of errors. My apologies, but can't change them. It is what it is. Tried to leave an "other option" for all categories...because I reached my limit (lj cuts you off at a certain point, not sure what DW would do since I can't figure out how to do it in DW). Thought about asking what your favorite relationship was, but there are more relationship possibilities that you could adore than there are radio buttons, even if I excluded Buffy entirely, I'd still have problems limiting the # choices. So, if you want you can answer that in comments?

This is all radio buttons - because I want a more definite result. If you can't make up your mind or it doesn't apply, just skip those questions that don't work for you - god knows I will.

Thanks for taking my poll. Hope it's more than ten people - one can never tell with these things. Be depressing if it's less. Will state, that's the risk I always take with polls. It's the risk we all take, I guess.

So here it goes:

Cultural Poll with Quirky Weather, Color and Drink Options )
shadowkat: (fandom-tv sci-fi)
Pick your favorite tv show or book poll. Note - I deliberately left off choices such as "both" or "neither" - because I want to know which one people would pick if pressed. Granted, you probably haven't read or seen half of these - but that would make the choice easier, right?

The problem with posting polls - is as fun as they are, you really never know if anyone will respond. And if they do - how they will respond. It's a huge risk on the part of the poster, hence the reason I don't do them that often. But been thinking about this lately and wondering where folks fall - do people like Star Gate better than Farscape? Do they prefer Star Wars to BSG? Are they huge Twilight fans? This is fairly safe to voice your opinion on - because it requires work to figure out who voted and how they voted. And if you have quibbles, by all means complain in the comments.

I ended up making if 15 questions, was originally 13 - but didn't want to tempt fate. Silly, I know.

Slightly better day, but felt ill and headachy throughout most of it, even though I did manage to clock seven and half hours of sleep for once. Have come to the conclusion that I need to fix my eating habits, because at the moment? I'm basically punishing myself with food. Hello, my name is s'kat and I am a compulsive eater, how are you? Sigh. Maybe a food diary will help?

A bunch of Doctor Who episodes are sitting on the DVR. Latest was Midnight - which I'm curious about, because it got lauded by the portion of my flist that is crazy about the series, much in the same way I was crazy about BTVS. The last time they went nuts over a Doctor Who episode it was "Blink" and they were right about that one. It was brilliant, and notably not written by Russel T. Davies, but by Stephen Moffat (I believe). Don't quite share that same level of affection for Doctor Who, they do. It's fun, I enjoy watching it. But, that's where it ends. The fannishness over BSG, I understood. Doctor Who (with the exception of Blink and Family of Blood)? Not so much.

Speaking of Whoverse, it is interesting that James Marsters plays basically the same character on Torchwood, but without nearly the same level of chemistry and appeal that he played it on Buffy. While I'm tempted to blame the actor, I know too much about the television process to do so. (That and I've seen far too many episodes of Torchwood, great television it ain't. Fun cult tv, sure. But it ain't memorable folks. And Russel T. Davies is well to Joss Whedon, what Stephanie Meyer is to JK Rowling. Marsters did state once that it was the writing and directing on that series that made him look great not him. Now that I've seen him in a wide variety of other roles (the best interestingly enough villians) I tend to agree.)

By the way, I'm not really fannish about any tv show or book or movie at the moment. So, it's NOT just Doctor Who. Feel much the same way about Grey's, BSG, Ugly Betty, Lost, the list goes on and on and on. I watch far too much tv for my own good - what can I say? I *really* adore the medium. By fannish - I mean no compulsion to read fanfic, rewatch episodes or watch more than once, buy DVD's, or fan magazines, or read essays and discuss. Sort of miss that compulsion in a way. It was a nice way of coping with stress, much healthier than compulsive eating. Not that I didn't do both.

Quick meme on fannishness:

1. Attitude towards own fannishness?

Embarrassed, prefer not to admit to it.

2. Things been sort of fannish about?

Twin Peaks (blame Kidbro for making me tape all the episodes for him), BTVS, Angel (last two seasons, and last five episodes of third), Firefly (well sort of), X-men comic books, Star Wars (go ahead, laugh), Indiana Jones, BattleStar Galatica (version 1) and for the first two seasons version 2 (still love the show, just not fannish),
Battle of the Planets (I had a crush on Mark - yes, I know he was animated), Kimba (crush on Kimba at the age of 5, and yes, animated), Robin Hood (the animated Disney version), The Monkees (huge crush on Davey Jones - which is odd considering the man was so short, did not realize how short until I met him in person - of course he used to be a jockey, so sort of makes sense).

3. Celebrities been fannish over?

Sigh, very embarrassing, not to mention unproductive since they usually don't appear in all that much causing much frustration and annoyance.

4. Fandom?

Bewildering. Still not quite sure what to make of it or my reactions to it, except that the internet has managed to make it more accessible and easier to do. Or I wouldn't have fallen into it when I did.

5. What brought you into your first experience with fandom?

6. You mention the thing that brought you into fandom, why were you into that thing?

7. Are you a cinemaphile? (Cinemaphile is I think a word I just made up to mean a film buff or person who appreciates film as high art or quality and critiques it, as opposed to you know, just plunking down and watching whatever.) Nope. I like to just watch movies and occassionally write long rambling reviews and critiques. I think if I was forced to do it for a living, I would stop enjoying it. Also am a moody watcher - in that I might love a particular movie one day, due to the mood I'm in, yet if I saw it another day or week later, I might despise it. Am this way about books and tv shows to. Which to the objective observer must make me appear to be a tad indecisive or wishy-washy at times, since I keep changing my mind. (As I think someone once stated in a post - "I'm agnostic about my interests/choices" or something like that - I adored the phrase so much that I acutally remembered it, but am not sure who said it, I think it was ponygirl, but I could be wrong.) Example of moodiness: I was a strong B/A shipper until 1999. Then stopped completely. There are other examples of moodiness, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment, plus headach is drifting back.

Since sick headache is drifting back and am tired, will end this now. (Stupid emoticons are limiting, I wanted icky or headachey, not just sick.)

The Unpopular Fannish Opinion meme that I'm swiping from [livejournal.com profile] buffyannatator. **Note the purpose of the meme is to come up with opinions that will most likely annoy your flist and make them flee in disgust. ie. I would never admit these things on fanboards, perish the thought.

the unpopular fandom opinion meme...please note, the point of this meme is to state opinions you know will annoy people on your flist and you normally keep to yourself as much as possible. )
