Decided to watch "12/12/12 - the Benefit for Hurricane Sandy Relief"...tomorrow there's a protest in the city regarding FEMA's poor response:
There has to be a better emergency plan than this...
At least a thousand impoverished people from the Rockaways and other shore communities have been made homeless as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Many of them were transported from shelter to shelter, and then taken to various hotels in Manhattan ranging from luxury to Y’s. There has been no provision for food, medical services or case management. After pleas to numerous agencies, nothing has been gained except 2 weeks of $100/wk debit cards from the Red Cross, which are now over. They have been left on their own to stand in line daily at food pantries or to go to ERs for 2 day supplies of medications. Local stores will not even take food stamps. They are due to be evicted on 12/15 or 12/31 and have no future housing plans. There are no relief assistance offices in Manhattan and they have little if any computer access. Now it appears they will lose their welfare benefits because they have no permanent home addresses.
Please add your voice in protest to this abandonment of those most vulnerable in our society at the local headquarters of FEMA and Housing and Urban Development.

I'm not sure I agree with it. But that's because I work for a government agency and am aware of the complex issues involved. The local community response, non-government oriented, has actually been better.

Not as pretty as the fake photos though.
Like all things...the response to the hurricane and the aid provided is a mixed bag. There are stories of heroism and painful loss, as well as hope and despair. The concert is a mixed bag as well...but I like some of the musicians, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, the Who, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, and even Alicia Keyes, Bon Jovi and Billy Joel. Sort of want to see McCartney and the Stones on the same stage as the Who.
Workwise - have had three-four projects affected by the Hurricane. They are providing people who have suffered financial hardship...with vacation buy-back, and allowing employees to donate time to those who have suffered due to the hurricane.
[ETA: Oh goody, the money is going to Robin Hood Relief Fund. Go to www.121212Concert.org to contribute. Or go to Itunes1212.com and download the music.
The Robin Hood Relief Fund is much better than the Red Cross - they learned their lesson finally - it goes directly to the relief effort and bypasses the bureaucratic red tape of the government orgs. Or you can talk to a celebrity at the number at the bottom of the screen. *Caveat? I know nothing about the Robin Hood Relief Fund. And am too lazy to research it. I'm guessing you can do that yourself? Right?]
