Day 236 of the Corona Virus Diaries...
Oct. 23rd, 2020 06:05 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I overslept this morning. The alarm went off, I shut it off, and slept until 7:46am, instead of getting up at 6:30 am. I think I did it in my sleep - I don't remember shutting it off, but I do remember it going off and ignoring it.
Reason? Couldn't sleep - too hot, so uncomfortable, possibly hot flashes and night sweats. I used cooling blanket, and ice on the chest, still too hot.
Too humid. I gave up finally today - around five something, and put on the A/C. I tried to open windows, but too humid and the mold is driving my allergies crazy. Good news? Or plus side of working remotely? No one noticed. I clocked in. Then took the shower, fixed breakfast, etc. If I had to commute - I'd have had to work late. Other good news? Crazy Org cancelled the Teams Town Hall meeting they set up for election day - I'm thinking someone picked up on that and nixed it.
Got some things done today. My calendar reminded me that I had a MS Teams training session at 10 am to learn about the new agency's process in the purchasing/contract system. Which is way too complicated to even attempt to discuss here - except while they've made some things easier, they've added yet another step that will most likely result in delays. Bureaucracy often occurs when you split a job up between one too many groups or people. But I did get excited when I figured out that I was no longer responsible for distributing and collecting a slew of forms for every single solicitation.
Tired. Somewhere around 3, brain fog set in.
New York vs. the Corona Virus
Apparently, they've re-opened movie theaters in New York (just not in the city or urban areas). The movie theater on the news looks amazing, it's in Yonkers - the Showcase. Although they are only showing three movies a day, for time to clean between showings, and there's not many out - they are showing the ones that came out in August.
They are trying to get the word out. Regal had closed everything, and now is kind of re-opening. So they are trying to convince folks it's safe. Also the only ones out at the moment are : New Mutants, Fighting with Grandpa, Tenet, and something else.
Meanwhile, New York got annoyed when the pathological liar in the white house decided to state NY was little more than a ghost town now. (It's not, I know I live here. It's no different than anywhere else.)
They are going nuts with "getting out the vote" - and detailed the dates. Tomorrow is the start of early voting. I was going to just drop off my ballot at the early voting site. But wimped out and sent it in by mail instead - went to the post office and sent it in person. Checked the tracking site - which informs me that they know I mailed it and it has been received by the post office.
Dates in NY?
October 27 - last day to request application for absentee ballot (personally I think you're taking a huge risk doing that.)
November 1 - last day for early voting.
November 3 - you ballot for absentee voting must be postmarked no later than November 3.
This is the first time in history that New York has done early voting or for that matter expanded mail in voting. They are doing everything possible to make voting safe during the virus. There's masks and hand sanitizer provided at all voting locations, along with social distancing guidelines.
Watching how NY has handled the pandemic has been fascinating, they have actually done a lot better than I expected. I had low expectations.
Oh, and average rents in NYC have dropped below $3000 for the first time in decades. They are at the lowest they've been in a long time. I'm not surprised, a lot of people are moving upstate and to the suburbs. Apparently Long Island homes are being snatched up, and it's a sellers market out there. Same with upstate - the prices are going up - in the burbs. (Again not surprised - know a lot of folks moving out there at the moment.) Wimps.
They are not New Yorkers, they are transplants in their 30s.
Almost forgot - The Strand is in trouble. They were really in a tight spot and went on social media stating they really needed help, and sales had gone down by 70%, and loans were depleted. This is the last book store on book store alley. Apparently, people crashed their online website buying books and trying to keep them afloat. So it helped, but they'll need a lot more to stay afloat. The pandemic, unsurprisingly, is really hurting the retail and book stores.
Family
Brother went out to Fire Island for the last time. He sold his place out there to the original builder. (I only went out twice, both times with my parents and brother. Never was there with sisinlaw.)
They sold it - because of the obnoxious Long Islanders out there. Apparently his obnoxious neighbor was buying up property to set up a family only commune. The neighbor had a huge wedding on the beach out there recently - everyone in the family caught COVID. Brother was avoiding them. He doesn't care if the builder sells it to the obnoxious neighbor, he just refused to.
He left niece on her own for one night - with rules not to ask anyone over or to go anywhere. To stay put. Then when mother reminded him of the stuff he got into when they were away - he said, "you didn't tell her that, did you?" No, mother didn't. I would have if I'd called her and remembered it. I didn't - because I was in college at the time my brother did it, and was kind of told after the fact.
Father isn't peeing enough according to mother. Yes, she feels the need to regale me with my father's daily bodily functions now.
Mother: And your father peed once today. He didn't yesterday.
Me: I don't need to know this -
Mother: You don't understand - he doesn't pee enough, I'm worried about it.

I keep forgetting things. Major brain fog. Goal this weekend is to clear out some books, DVDs, CDs, etc from current coffee table - and take them to the basement (or basically give them away). Flirted with a book shelf on Amazon, but it was too good to be true - no real assembly required, etc. I read the reviews and backed away. I'm going to wait for when I can buy and get someone to assemble. I'm not really a hoarder, I just suck at getting rid of DVDs, CDs, books, clothes and shoes for some reason.
Anyhow, we'll see if I can motivate myself to do this - before my new coffee table arrives next Thursday.
And...Whedon apparently finished his new series for HBO, The Nevers - the link is to an article regarding the show's progress via Nick Frost, who stars in it along with a bunch of others. It's ten episodes, and no one knows how HBO will choose to drop it or when. HBO's been doing rather well in regards to new content. Television is doing better than movies, theater, or book stores for that matter - mainly because you don't have to leave your home to watch, and they've figured out how to create content during a pandemic.
Apparently skeletons are popular Halloween decorations this year. The below pic was taken on my walk around my block and to the fruit and veggie store, to pick up salad veggies, potato chips, and chocolate. (Which I'm slowly growing weary of - the chocolate, not the rest - weirdly.)
Good night, and good luck.

no subject
Date: 2020-10-24 12:23 am (UTC)I buy everything as e-books or audible right now - because I don't have the space for more books, and I have difficulties reading the small print in paperbacks and hardbacks. You can enlarge the digital print.
Regarding The Nevers - I'd forgotten about it too, it popped up on the Whedon Studies Face Book page that I've been following. (The trick to FB is to have as many side-private groups as possible.) Still not clear whether it will be released on HBO Max or HBO.
But it's pretty much done for the most part. They started production again in July/August in Britain. It's all filmed in Britain and studios over there. Most of the cast is actually British.
