I might go with the end of Beneath You for the best scene in Buffy. Others would be your choice of the end of Smashed, Giles finding Jenny, and the opening of The Body.
Funny, I've been re-watching S1 of The Wire while I wait for my S2 Game of Thrones to get here, and I just saw that chess scene. It is good, though I might like the one with Stringer Bell in the redevelopment building (I phrased that carefully to avoid spoilers) later on. In defense of your choice, what happens later in S1 with Bodie and Wallace makes the chess scene all the more poignant in retrospect.
