That was my first impression as well, or rather my take on it until I thought about it again this morning and felt the need to add the bit about the childlike aspect of the crayons.
But "childlike" or "childishness" may be the wrong word to use here. "Creative" is better. Spike thinks differently than Wes does. Wes is rational, and some respects darker. Spike thinks in poetic metaphor, color, abstract...lines, and impressions. It's that sort of innocent way of looking at love...
While at the same time it so clearly depicts that Spike focuses on those who are important, the others are blurred, he doesn't really see them. She stands out.
Very interesting way of showing how Spike thinks. Kind of in love with it myself. It's actually what blew me away - regarding the comic. Those three pages. I've yet to see anyone else attempt that. It's also what comics are all about - the use of art to depict what is happening inside the characters heads. Not to show submarines and huge monsters and big insane fights - you can do that in movies and in words, you don't need a comic book.
