Agreed. Padalacki is playing it surprisingly well. He's performance reminds me a great deal of Michael C Hall's in Dexter (which I'm not sure if you've seen?) - which is quite similar. Understated. The feeling of an actor attempting to play what he believes to be emotion or caring, when he clearly has no understanding of what it is. He remembers it. But doesn't feel it. It also reminds me a little of Amy Acker's take on Illyria. And Summer Glau's take on the Terminator in Sarah Connor Chronicles.
