Happy New Year
Dec. 31st, 2023 09:14 pm2023 was better than the previous three years, but this wasn't hard considering all 2023 had to do - was not hurt, maim or kill any of my family members or friends or co-workers. 2020- 2022 had set a very low bar in that regard.
For 2024, I am continuing to go in with low expectations and a creeping sense of dread. This is mainly due to Crazy Workplace and our nutty politics.
Saw a lot of movies this year, mainly on streaming. I remember roughly a third of them. And got to see my niece graduate from college. Currently watching Green Day singing "American Idiot" on ABC during the Rocking New Year's Eve. (I actually like that song and Green Day, so listening to them for a bit is actually entertaining as background music. I like them better than Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodgrigo - a whole lot better - I bought their CD back in the day. This probably tells you more about my music taste that I want you to know? In that I'm not really a fan of pop. More grunge rock.)
Of the movies I've seen? Oppenheimer still leads by about a mile. Although it's probably not fair to compare them? I hate it when other people do that.
Today?
I finished White Lotus S2 - which also borrows heavily from Patricia Highsmith and Triangle of Sadness - in that it is a biting satire about the idle (and somewhat vapid) rich. My difficulty with these series is the characters feel very one note and not all that interesting. I finished it - because I wanted to know how they killed off Jennifer Coolidge and why. (It's not a spoiler - she's the body found in the first episode, although I'd forgotten it was her (two years between seeing episode 1 and episode four) and thought it was the younger blond, so was actually kind of surprised?) Leave the World Behind was next up - starring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawk, Marshala Ali, and Kevin Bacon (in a minor role), plus a couple of unknowns playing their kids. It's a psychological horror film about the end of the world. ( Read more... )
It's okay. Was adapted from the book of the same name and produced by the Obamas. Available on Netflix.
Flora and Son - a palate cleanser. It's a lovely little drama about a divorced mother trying to raise her seventeen year old son in Dublin.
And they find a way of connecting through music. ( Read more... )

* Already posted about Doctor Who Specials 1-4 I loved them. I don't have a lot to say about them. There's just some things that I want to enjoy without any analysis whatsoever. Doctor Who falls into that category. I either enjoy it or I don't. I loved the recent specials.

I can't remember if I made any last year. I was just happy to get out of 2022 intact, and sane.
This year was a slog. But better than last year (again not hard).
