I agree with your mother about historical romances, the sexism in the stories usually comes from the greater society and makes sense in historical context, and sometimes the hero has to overcome his learned behaviours to be with the heroine. In contemporary romance the sexism can be a little harder to take, and sometimes you can feel the authors personal opinions bleeding through, especially about marriage and children.
